The BSCW system originated in the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT in the mid-1990s. In 1998 a FIT spin-off, OrbiTeam Software GmbH & Co. KG, took responsibility for ongoing development, marketing and world-wide support of the BSCW Shared Workspace System.

In the evolution of the BSCW platform, OrbiTeam and Fraunhofer FIT work closely together. New functionality developed in European research projects is incorporated quickly in the BSCW platform.
